Luigi Kasimir

Austrian born etcher and painter, Luigi Kasimir was born in 1881 in Pettau, a part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. He attended the Vienna Academy of Art where he studied under William Unger, who introduced Kasimir to the technique of colored etching. Kasimir was one of the first artists to develop the technique of colored etching. He would first complete a sketch, usually in pastel, then he would transfer the design on to as many as six plates, printing them in succession and applying the color on the plate- all by hand. The resulting etching is a true original. Since Luigi Kasimir’s death in 1962, his son Robert has carried on the family tradition.
