Fernando Amorsolo

Fernando Amorsolo’s boyhood was spent in Daet, Camarines Sur. One of the first six graduates of the UP School of Fine Arts 1n 1919, he was awarded with several medals as tokens of highest excellence. From 1938 – 1952 he was the director of the UP school of Fine Arts. He has exhibited in New York, Belgium, and participated in numerous local and international group exhibitions.; his distinctions include the gold medal of recognition awarded by UNESCO, the Rizal Pro-Patria Award and the Araw ng Maynila Award (1963). Proclaimed posthumously as National Artist in 1973, his work is in the collection of the late President Sukarno of Indonesia, notably an oil painting, depicting what are thought to be Javanese rice fields with people at work dated circa 1950.
